MoE Top Brass Invites PAGE, Schools

A landmark meeting was held yesterday. Present from the Ministry of Education was the top brass, PAGE (Chair & Deputy Chair) and PTAs from selected KL schools.

The Director-General said of EGMs, "let bygones be bygones" and let's move forward. Although the EGM should have been the platform for parents to speak up, due to the sensitivity of the subject in question, the Ministry has urged parents to hold parents' meetings instead to discuss the issue and will consider positively should there be a request to use the school premises for this purpose.

The Ministry will welcome all written outcomes and decisions arising from that parents' meeting.

More importantly, PAGE is again acknowledged by the Ministry of Education, for its contribution towards feedback on PPSMI and its desire to represent parents throughout the country who support the policy. It has been suggested that PAGE present a memorandum on the fourth option and category, that is, SK/SMK (SMI).

The PTA of SMK Seri Hartamas took the opportunity to hand its parents' mandate to the Minister's office.

The Registrar of PTAs was also present. He will facilitate parents' meetings. Any obstacles from principals/district offices will be ironed out by him. It is to be stressed that the subject matter to be discussed is to seek exemption from the decision and to be re-categorised as SK/SMK (SMI) and not to object to it.

This is excellent news. Parents must all rally to propose SRJK (I) and SMJK (I) without any further ado. Congratulations PAGE! Keep up the sterling work.

Thank you PAGE for your unrelenting pursuit of the cause! We hope the continuing dialogue with the Ministry will bear fruit :)

HOw do we contact all the parents? The addresses are kept by the school/PTA.

What happens if they do not want to divulge the addresses?

Sorry I have to correct you. THis is a very serious matter. We ARE NOT, I repeat, ARE NOT asking for English schools.

We are mearly asking for a continuation of the existing policy which is Science and Maths in English (SMI). We still uphold the constitution in mainiting BM as the main language of instruction with 60% of the teaching hours in English.

Dear Keang,

Refer to the above meeting and request your YDP to write to invite parents. Seek the help of the principal to distribute the invitation to the parents.

TQ Azimah.

Will the PIBG be responsible for the costs incurred in organising this parents' meeting?

Also, now that the voting is by the parents alone without the teachers' votes, can you repost the relevant sections essential for this parents' meeting?

TQ again.

Dear Page,

Besides proposing SMI, can PAGE also propose to Ministry to close schools for two (2) weeks holidays instead of the one (1) week holiday in view of the spread of HINI/puasa/and UPSR exam on 7,8,9th Sept.

There are many schools eg skttdi(1),skjc sj etc already closed since few days back because there were few cases of HINI in their schools. To curb spread, parents appeal that schools close for the next two weeks before the UPSR exam.

Very much appreciate it. Well done, PAGE! Your good work will go a long way...We support PAGE 100%.

Sori, what is YDP? Nothing is happening in my son's school.

Instead of leaving it to parents to initiate parents' meetings, knowing that they may be obstacles or some parents may not be aware of what to do, perhaps the MOE could initiate the effort to find out as to which schools want to retain PPSMI to know the actual situation

Juanita, YDP is Yang Di Pertua of PIBG or Chairperson of the PTA. What school are you with?

PPSMI Boleh, the Ministry is not going to do anymore than they need to until pressed to do so. We are on our own at our own momentum. For now.

Hi Page,
Just 2share wt all readers of Page.
A friend of mine (husband an architect) had to migrate to Australia to get a PR for the children's education there. They are not the only ones doing that.So many had seek overseas education after the switch from English to Bahasa (before the switch, we had Cambridge (G.C.E.)education(1st class education under Tunku Abdul Rahman)

If our education system was reverted to the old system, then these people would not have to migrate & lots of money saved & talents retained here.No need to import for expertise or "beg" those Malaysian talents to come home. How nice!

During our time in the 50's-60's, we had very good English teachers (all GCE trained) and we studied mostly in English but our Bahasa was also excellent as we had to pass Bahasa to obtain a certificate. Don't understand why this good quality system was dismantled.During our time, no one had to get a PR overseas 4free education overseas as we had it all in our homeland- British education (a world renowned education). We should be thankful to the British for educating us English,if not, our knowledge, freedom of communication, travelling and job opportunities would be limited & hampered. Many of us would want our children to enjoy these priviledges & opportunities too.

Govt should give options to schools to establish English medium education system for those who want to pursue the English education (with of course Bahasa as a mandatory pass as we are Malaysians)but other subjects esp Maths, Science & Geography/Histroy (be bilingual or 2 options given to schools).

In secondary, all subjects except English,Maths & Science are in English.Others like Geog,History,Seni,Moral etc are in Bahasa. How could then Bahasa be obsolete when 80% of the subjects are still in Bahasa? With this, we feel PPSMI should be allowed to continue without any cut-off date (those who want in Bahasa can opt for Bahasa 100% but be flexible with other schools that opt for English medium education).Parents would then saved a lot of money sending children to overseas or international schools.

One important issue is, there would be more mixed racial in Govt schools if the schools are English medium, hence 1Malaysia can be achieved.

If PPSMI is abolished in 2015, most Govt schools would have no more mixed racial and this would divide Malaysians even more.

During our time, all races go to Govt schools because it was under the English system which was favourable to most parents, until it was switched to Bahasa and now the Malays in some areas do not want to learn in English as they were given the priviledge to learn in Bahasa.

We hope Page is successful in bringing the old education system back! Good luck.

Old student, most of us know why the education standard has declined and I am sure the politicians fully know. With the abolition of PPSMI, we will see more racial polarisation. It will really be ideal and in line with 1Malaysia if we have all secondary schools teaching English, Science & Maths in English and the rest in BM. The schools would cater for all races. We will have a nation which is bilingual I guess the politcians are more interested in collecting votes.

Sori Datin for late reply has been having some net problem.

Did approach an AJK of the school (SKSS), gave him PAGE's site. Feed back was illegal site and that the school was a Malay school. I said it was not illegal and only wanted to seek status quo immaterial of whatever school it is and that was it.

Azimah PPAGE said...

PAGE cannot be illegal if the Ministry of Education (MOE)has on numerous occasions invited us to meet with them including offering us to do a 20-minute presentation for the support of PPSMI at the 4th roundtable in October 2008.

Even the Director-General of the MOE has viewed our blog. He told me so.

No worries. Some just want to remain frogs when they can be princes! That's one school less to think of.

PPSMI Boleh said...

If the DG of MOE or any senior MOE officials are reading our comments, please tell your political masters to stop the political fights and stop the rot in the education system. No point coming out with all sort of ideas when we should go back to the basics of education. An example is not teaching grammar in English which the Minister just found out recently. Big joke. Keep PPSMI will allow Malaysia to catch up as we have slipped backwards a lot. It is not too late to catch up
