Science & Maths: Students can continue in English

Aug 9, 09 2:47pm
Students who began studying Mathematics and Science in English could continue to do so until they finished their secondary school education, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said that the issue was also raised by his Cabinet colleagues and he would like to allay the concerns expressed by parents.

"We discussed the matter," he was quoted by Bernama as telling told Malaysian journalists covering his five-day working visit to Perth which ended today.

Muhyiddin said that students who had started learning the two subjects in English would continue to be taught in English, and have the option and freedom of answering examination questions in either Bahasa Malaysia or English.

"They (the parents) should not be unduly worried," he said. "I want to allay the concern of parents. We are adopting a soft landing approach...giving a chance to move slowly into the new system," he said.

Recently, the government had announced changes to the PPSMI policy where the teaching of Mathematics and Science would be reverted to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools, and Chinese and Tamil in vernacular schools from 2012.

Barred PTA meet: 'I am sorry'

The PPSMI policy was implemented in phases, beginning with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003, under former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's administration.

On newspaper reports today that the education department had withdrawn permission for the SMK Sri Hartamas Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to convene an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to voice their opposition over the reversal of the policy to use English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics, Muhyiddin said the department officers should not have done as such.

"We are quite open. They (the department) should not overreact. I am sorry. I apologise. I think it is not fair (to withdraw the permission)," he said.

Muhyiddin hoped the department officers would not do such things in future.

He said by objecting to the reversal of the policy, it showed in a way, the success of the policy, although the government had to reverse it, taking into consideration the larger interests of students in the country.

FOR OUR CHILDREN.

This is the start. Next, we need to convince the government that choices of languagae should be given to the schools to decide EVEN for those students whom have not commenced primary school education. Do you think its possible?

It took a strong and brave man like the Deputy Prime Minister to apologise to parents. We accept your apology, Tan Sri. We will be looking beyond 2012 now.

Ada terbaca satu rencana. Dikatakan bahawa negara berstatus maju seperti Jepun masih giat melakukan penterjemahan bahan ilmu termasuk jurnal daripada pelbagai bahasa (Inggeris, Perancis, German dll) ke dalam Bahasa Jepun. Walaupun dah banyak, kena tambah supaya lagi bertambah banyak.

Dear PAGE,
PAGE has done a good job! Million thanks for your struggle and determination. This shows MOE did not make an indepth study before announcing the policy. Just bantai sahaja to please the Malay voters for next GE since Opposition is in favour of abolishing PPSMI.Maybe a political phychological war but at the expense of the schools, teachers and students and our future! We have wasted 22 years in our education system.Do not let this happen again for another 50 years. By being too protective of BM and Malays would breed more fanatics and terrorists. We blame Indonesia for terrorism but in actual fact most of the terrorist are Malaysians doing the "job" in Indonesia. Indonesia is more liberal compared to Malaysia.Do we want our future generations to be like that? Malaysian terrorists were born over the period of 22 years. We never heard of Malaysian terrorists before that. What caused it?? Memang Education. We have to get it right this time, from past experiences and incidents. Not too late, better late than never.

I hope PAGE will continue to pursue on the choice of language used to each Maths n Science. We need to fight for our kids future. A circular should be sent out to the schools to endorse the Education Minister's statement. Our politicians are famous for "forgetting" what they said

PTA,

Memetik "By being too protective of BM and Malays would breed more fanatics and terrorists"

Mempertahankan BM boleh menggalakkan kegiatan pengganas?

Teori sesat mana ni? Orang lain tak kiralah Pro atau Anti PPSMI termasuk PAGE setuju juga ke?

It is heartening that the Minister of Education has clarified that students who began studying Mathematics and Science in English can continue to do so until they finished their Secondary School education.

I take this to mean that students who join Tahun 1 in 2011 (policy will only be implemented in 2012) are allowed to continue to study and take their public exam for Maths & Science in English until 2021.

By 2020, Vision 2020 is targeted to be achieved and Malaysia by then should be a fully developed and industrialised nation.

Is there any necessity to force the children entering Tahun 1 in 2012 to be subjected to the new policy of teaching of Maths & Science in Bahasa Malaysia? Bearing in mind that this cohort of students will complete their Secondary Education in 2022.

The Ministry of Education has satisfied the rural and vernacular primary schools with the teaching of Maths and science in Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil. We are requesting the Ministry to give our future generation the Fourth Option-The Teaching of Mathematics and Science in English.

Please do not Play, Play with the future of our children and Nation.

HEAR OUR CRIES AND PLEADS !!!

IT IS SAD THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS CHOSEN TO REVERT MATHS AND SCIENCE TO BE TAUGHT IN BAHASA MALAYSIA. FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO ARE AFFECTED, MY SYMPATHY GOES TO THEM. I AM SURE THE PARENTS ARE BAFFLED AND EXTREMELY DISTURBED BY THIS DECISION. DO CONSIDER ENGAGING ENGLISH TEACHERS FROM ABROAD TO BRING US TO THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. LET US NOT BE INFERIOR AND RETARDED. MANY MANY GRADUATES TODAY CANNOT SPEAK AND WRITE PROPER ENGLISH. WHEN ALL THESE EMAILS, REPORTS, ETC. ARE PUBLISHED OR GO OUT OF THE COUNTRY, THE RECIPIENTS CANNOT MAKE OUT OR UNDERSTAND THE CONTENTS. EVEN THOUGH MY CHILDREN WONT BE AFFECTED UNDER THE NEW POLICY, MY HEART REALLY GRIEVES FOR THOSE AFFECTED PARENTS AND CHILDREN. WHY GO BACKWARDS, SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND TAKE THE CHALLENGE. KEEP THE CURRENT POLICY, WE WONT GO WRONG. INVEST IN OUR CHILDREN, THEY WILL BE THE FUTURE OF THE COUNTRY.

Pak Kadok kempunan kedua-duanya. Yang jauh tak terkejar, yang dekat ketinggalan.

Itulah tauladan oleh orang tua-tua kita. Boleh disesuaikan juga untuk kes PPSMI ni. Sejarah memang sentiasa berulang.

On Sunday 9/8/09, the Minister of Education announced that students who began studying Maths & Science in English can continue to do so until they finished their Secondary School education. This means that students who began Tahun 1 in 2011 can still take their public exams in 2015(UPSR), 2018(PMR), 2021(SPM) for Maths & Science in English.

On Tuesday, 11/8/09, the Director General of Education after meeting with the Minister of Education announced that the last year for Maths & Science to be conducted in two languages are 2016(UPSR) and 2015(SPM). It appears that in the Ministry of Education, the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.

Can we request the Minister of Education and officials of the Ministry of Education to sit down with interested groups e.g. PAGE, PTA, MAPS (Malaysian Association of Private Schools, Headmasters and Principals Association, Teachers Union etc and discuss what is best for our children and the future of Malaysia before coming up with half-baked announcement which not only confuses everyone but give no confidence to the Education System in Malaysia.

Dear Lee of Kuching,
I don't think MOE meant what you mentioned.I am also confused now with the re-revert announcement.Definitely, we are elated when our MOE announced that those under PPSMI can continue until finish secondary.Did MOE meant the following:
1. First batch of PPSMI students can now continue PPSMI until finished Secondary school?
2. Students can still do PPSMI until 2014 or is it now 2016 (not sure as i heard todays radio it is now 2016) and these students under PPSMI are allowed to do PPSMI until finished secondary?
3. Only those students not under PPSMI when comes 2014 or 2015 or 2016 when PPSMI is abolished from thereon are not allowed to do PPSMI from Primary to Secondary i.e all in BM even apply to vernacular schools i.e no more Mandarin/Tamil in Maths & Science in 2015 or 2016?
4. So, meaning those before 2015 who enrol into Std 1 could still be under PPSMI & could still do PPSMI until finished secondary?
Ples. PAGE enlighten us parents & students on this. Our Moe latest announcement is not specific. He said those who are doing PPSMI can continue PPSMI until secondary.Looks like Lucy is right. If a student is in Std 1 before 2015, all these students would be still under PPSMI and they could continue PPSMI even after 2015 until finished secondary? Is that correct? OMG! pLS. PAGE put on your PAGE what our MOE re-NEWED POLICY ON PPSMI.Pls. clarify.Appreciate very much for the benefit of all parents who are now very confused.

Giving who a chance to move slowly into the new system?

Why are the teachers Union agreeing on everything that comes from MOE? They themselves cannot see the future of our kids. Why is it these people fail to see that the terms and information at higher levels are in English? We are not campigning English language . WE ARE LOOKING BEYOND LANGUAGE!!! Science and Maths should be taught in English so that our children will be able to face globalisation in the FUTURE! Mere English Conversational skills will not guarantee this. Even now we are facing an uphill task of promoting English languange in schools . When PPSMI is abolished it's going to be even WORST!
Teachers who claim to be English teachers are not teaching the languange properly ,if not why is the MOE going down under to look for teachers? Shame on us.
MOE should give parents the FOURTH CHOICE of Schools that can teach Maths and Science in English for both primary and secondary.

Lucy Lee of Kuching,

The roundtables were supposed to have done just that, provide dialogue. Sadly, none of the findings were considered in the final decision. Glaringly, not once was secondary schools mentioned about reverting!
