PAGE appeals to education minister

The Edge Financial Daily
Friday, 06 November 2009 00:18

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of parents calling themselves the Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) has appealed to the education minister to give national schools the option of maintaining the teaching of science and maths in English (PPSMI).

In a statement yesterday, PAGE chairperson Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said a PAGE survey conducted in 2008 among parents throughout Malaysia showed 95% support for PPSMI to be continued.

“Tun Mahathir in his blog polled 84% against the government decision to abolish PPSMI. Even the ministry of education’s own telephone hotline survey showed over 90% of callers wanted PPSMI to be continued,” she said.

Noor Azimah said recently parents from seven schools in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, which were able to do surveys and EGMs, returned a majority of 94% to 98% of parents wanting PPSMI.

She said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in his blog, had explicitly rejected the idea of the single stream school because the rakyat was not ready for it. Noor Azimah questioned if the rakyat was ready or accepted the abolition of PPSMI in national schools.

“We sincerely thank our Prime Minister for respecting the spirit of the Education Act 1996 which calls for children to be educated according to the wishes of their parents.

“We hope our minister of education is able to emulate our honourable Prime Minister in respecting and honouring the wishes of parents by giving our national schools the option to choose or reject PPSMI. Parents wait for the education minister’s decision to appreciate 1Malaysia, People First,” she said.

Noor Azimah called on the ministry to let parents voice their wishes through parent-teacher association EGMs or AGMs. “Then we, the rakyat, will truly appreciate our prime minister’s call for 1Malaysia, People First,” she added.

A big thank you to all supporters of PPSMI / SK/SMK(SMI) for responding to the PM's blog.

I think we have created a tsunami as many more comments have not yet been published.

Persatuan anda sepatunya dinamakan Parent Action Group for Education of English Oriented Malaysian.

Malaysia? Hanya dengan bertukar bahasa? Bahasa hanyalah alat. Itulah masalahnya, kalau orang jahil yang bersuara.

Read today's New Sunday Times on pages 6 & 7, "Can some schools have Science and Math in English?"

The PTA chairman of a rural school in Pahang commented that just because they are rural does not mean they do not want Science and Math in English.

It was a great effort on the part of NST and its team.

I think for PAGE to push for the the option of PPSMI, you should check these facts. Find out which school our Ministers & Deputy Ministers send their children or grandchildren to. And publish the full details. Then I'm sure you will know how many of them walk the talk.

To Anonymous If 90% want PPSMI and 10% don't want PPSMI, how would you decide ? Do you have an answer or are you saying that because of the 10% who do not want PPSMI, we abolish PPSMI ? We just want to be given the option for PPSMI and those who do not want PPSMI can also have the option.

Saudara CPLee,

Saya merujuk kepada prinsip "children to be educated according to the wishes of their parents".

Sekarang saya faham logicnya.

Just ponder...

Would Tun M (Dr)or PM Najib be PM today had they not studied in English during their times?
In fact they studied more in English than us now but are they any lesser Malay or less eloquent in Bahasa? In fact, English has enriched them and their lives and with the understanding of subjects in English had in turn empowered them and today it was proven that even with English, it had produced powers like our PMs who are both proficient in BM & BI(English). See what English has created.

Do we want to abolish what was good for them and what will be good for our future leaders? Big risk to take. To play safe just follow precedents (proven right path).Don't be foolish & use wisdom & be realistic & not sentiments - maintain PPSMI and move on (be more productive & progressive not unproductive & regressive)- our views.

Itulah ibaratnya PPSMI.

Saudara CP Lee,

Berbahagialah dengan daya *logik* tuan.

"Penguasaan bahasa boleh dicapai melalui aplikasi.."

PPSMI is not all about communication or conversation, my dear. We are talking about Science and Math. Common! Be a fool and accept the fact that language for hi-tech now is English. Don't deny the fact.

When talking about hi-tech, we need to a creator. Not as hi-end user. You got me? If you are end user, you will end up and coolie instead of being the employer or a boss.

You may argue that being a coolie is also satisfying. But wait a minute. Will fake Versace T-shirt is more satifying than Italy made version of Versace? I will shake my head if you choose the former.

Baik! Kau jawab ini.

Kenapa USA negara yang hampir kesemua penduduknya orang asing guna Inggeris. Betul?

Australia, penduduknya orang pendatang dari luar guna Inggeris. Betul?

New Zealand pun sama dengan Australia. Betul?

Canada pun pendudknya orang asing tapi guna Inggeris. Betul?

Singapore. Betul?

Don't get deceived. CPLee pretended to sulk mainly to entice your comment. Indeed you celebrated as if you have won the battle.

This is the principle of the JUNGLE. And it's SCARY.

Anonymous said...

Kenapa USA (termasuklah Australia, New Zealand) negara yang hampir kesemua penduduknya orang asing guna Inggeris? Betullah, dah memang BI dijadikan BAHASA UTAMA mereka.

Jadi kenapa perlu PPSMI? Belajar mengira asaspun guna BAHASA KEDUA.

Memang pelik. Tak pernah dalam mana-mana peradaban dunia, BAHASA KEDUA mendahului BAHASA PERTAMA (melalui PPSMI).

Saya kata saya menang? Bagaimana anda merasakan demikian? Saya rasa anda tak faham apa yang saya maksudkan yang akhirnya anda cuba membuat telahan sendiri. Berbahagialah.
