PAGE meets PTAs

Saturday 18 July 2009

The Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) met with several key PTA Chairmen or their representatives today at a closed-door session to brainstorm its next course of action.

Earlier, the Prime Minister had expressly stated that due consideration may be given to schools that desire to maintain the teaching of science and math in English (SMI) in their schools, either primary or secondary.

All schools that want to do so are advised to urge its PTA to convene an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to agree to maintain the policy and to convert the status of the school from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) or Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) to SK(SMI) or SMK(SMI). Failing that, parents are to initiate a signature drive to garner support for the cause indicating the name of the school, the name of the parent and the age of the child.

Meanwhile, PAGE urges the Ministry of Education to conduct its own studies as to which schools have benefited from the policy and which desire to maintain it.

Parents and stakeholders are also strongly urged to write to the Malay press (Berita Harian , Utusan Malaysia) seeking for the fourth option, that is, to maintain the policy in your school.

For secondary schools that want to retain the English option, you are encouraged to work with your primary feeder schools, to do likewise, to ensure the continuity of learning and to maintain the standards already proudly upheld by your school.

It is most important that PAGE needs to know the names of the schools interested. We need the numbers to succeed. Let us help each other out.

Copies of all EGM resolutions or signatures will be sent to PAGE for compilation and which will be forwarded to the Prime Minister in due course.

PAGE may be contacted via email at pagemalaysia@gmail.com or visit our blog at PAGE Malaysia.

Thank you.

Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim

Salam, tunku. We are in the midst of fine-tuning our sample letters/forms to be disseminated to schools that want the option. Please help by informing us of the schools that want to be given this option. Thank you.

For malaysian students' education future, I think the best way is to teach maths and science in english for secondary school so that they can learn those technical terms in english directly. This will help them to get better technical knowledge when they go for higher studies in universities for example engineering and medical courses.

I agree with Tunku. I hope PAGE can submit forms to all schools and ensure to get the acknowledged copy from each individual parent. From there we can actually see the great impact. I did see in one column you stated that the PIBG should voice out, but I think let us have the forms because some parents don't get involved in the PIBG.

I strongly believe that the PIBG should be allowed to select the medium of instruction for their children. If the teachers have a problem with that , then tranfer them out. It is because of these teachers the programme was unsuccessful. Many teachers were very happy to receive their BISP but refuse to teach in English. It was so obvious that the very next day of the announcement, teachers immediately started to teach in Bahasa Melayu. Is that fair?

Instead of allowing PIBG to decide, I would rather that school be allowed to teach these subjects in English as long as there are a minimum number of students opting for it probably 10. PIBG may be bias and not represent the voices of all students. Hence only those who can teach these subjects in English be allowed to receice the allowance. Why give these teachers BISP if they refuse to teach in English? Also consider having these teachers sit for a proficiency in teaching maths and science in Englsih test. Then we will probably know why PPSMI fail. Due to students or teachers?

Thank you PAGE for your unwavering effort on PPSMI.
What if the school is not in favour of PPSMI? Do we parents then have other options? Other than joining schools that support PPSMI that is.

sometimes schools and pibg are not in favour, that is why we need to get the parents wish/opinion on ppsmi.
till date they are not consulted at all.
that is why we hope PAGE can initiate like what i have suggested earlier.we can all help then to do the survey base on our location.

Agree Tunku, why the new Cabinet did not do this i.e get each school to submit their preference (in favour or against PPSMI)before the blanket policy and go against the wishes of many parents/students/schools in the first place???
There is no transparency and we had to buy their explanations and unclear non transparent objective and bias statistics.
Good idea to reach out to all national and private schools (under Govt syllabus) to indicate their preference after getting a majority vote from parent/students' choice. Most private schools 100% want PPSMI remain.
Those who DO NOT want PPSMI can switch to those schools without PPSMI.In this way, we Malaysians are multi-linguistic and multi-talented and a more balance spread of capabilities and individuals forming a rainbow Malaysia!More colorful and interesting and lives up to its Malaysia, truly Asia with a multiculture multiracial & multi-lingual society living harmoniously and peacefully under one multi-colored umbrella. So sweet, NOT dull like 1Malaysia.1Malaysia should be changed to 1Multi-culture & 1Multi-lingual Malaysia....it is achievable if our politicians are broad minded and open minded and not bias and double standard and racist.

I agree with tunku and anonymous-please distribute forms to all parents and schools-some schools in some areas or parents might not support the cause.Thank you PAGE.

I've spoken to the principal of my son's school & she gives me the impression she's not in favour of PPSMI. So where does that leave parents like me ? We hope you can help us, Datin Noor.

Don't know what to do. My son will be leaving his primary school this year and will be getting into an unknown school next year. All the parents of his current school are simple minded and poor income people.
Can PAGE prepare any letters to explain and forms for them to sign?
It will help a lot.
Having those letters / forms distributed quietly will avoid silly parents who are against your good work!

I pity those innocent parents who don't understand your course of action.
Please PAGE , have ready those explanations in writing & forms for distribution.
I am will to be your despatchman!

Many teachers and teacher trainers are in favour of PPSMI to be retained but their hands are tied. In the meantime, get to know the parents who support PPSMI to be retained in your school. If the EGM route is too difficult, we will consider an easier alternative.
